Studies in Space Harmony: Spatial Pulls, Planes and Movement Scales

with Amy Matthews
Mondays 2-4pm

How do you relate to the space around you?
Can you yield to space in the same way you yield to gravity?
Does feeling harmonic relationships in space help you experience movement more clearly?

Rudolf Laban said, “Space is a hidden feature of movement, and movement is a visible aspect of Space.” He explored how the spaces around us shape our movement choices, and articulated through the principles of Space Harmony how important our relationship to space can be, as a vehicle and inspiration for movement.

Body-Mind Centering adds even more possibility to the experience of space when we include embryology, developmental movement and experiential anatomy and kinesiology.

In this course we will explore what it means to have “a relationship to space”, and the movement scales from Laban Movement Analysis that explore movement in one, two and three-dimensions.

These movement scales challenge us to mobilize our center of gravity and to access a full range of choices in space. They reveal our habits and preferences, and help open up new choices in the dance between gravity and space.

There are no prerequisites for this course, and it will involve both movement practice and discussions of theory. You are encouraged to participate in the whole series, but can also take individual classes. Please register in advance.
