with Amy Matthews
Saturday & Sunday, 9:30am-5pm
These weekends are opportunities to take a deep dive into (rather than a quick tour of) various topics. We’ll take time to explore the details and practice the forms, and to see how repetition and exploration can support the ability to blend, distill or personalize a movement practice. Each weekend will have a focus on a movement form (such as the Bartenieff Fundamentals, or BMC’s Series 1 or Series 2, or LMA’s Spatial Scales) synthesized with ideas from other somatic practices, developmental movement, physiology, anatomy, kinesiology and embryology. There are no prerequisites for these workshops, and no previous experience is required.
The Bartenieff Fundamentals is an approach to movement observation, exploration and re-patterning that was developed by Irmgard Bartenieff. It includes a collection of simple movements (called the Basic 6) that can be explored in a huge variety of ways, and used as supporting forms for other practices (like BMC). In developing the Basic 6, Irmgard Bartenieff was looking for the functional movements (sometimes described as “building blocks”) that underlie both functional and expressive activities of daily life as well as movement practices.
The first three Embodied Learning Lab workshops will be on the Bartenieff Fundamentals – September is Lower Limbs, December is Upper Limbs and early 2018 will be on X-Rolls. Amy will be sharing variations she’s borrowed, adopted, and developed over the years, and explorations of the relationships between BF, BMC and PNF.
These workshops are open to people who have experience with BF but would like to spend more time exploring, AND people who have no experience with the Bartenieff Fundamentals.
September 30 & October 1
Bartenieff Fundamentals: Lower Limbs
In this workshop we will practice the Basic 6 (and related movements) that focus on the lower limbs – the heel rock, pre-thigh lift & thigh lift, forward and lateral pelvic shifts and knee drop – and see if they can be used to clarify pathways in the lower limbs and spine, illuminate our habits and help us make different choices about how we shift weight, change levels, and find support.
December 9 & 10
Bartenieff Fundamentals: Upper Limbs
In this workshop we will practice the Basic 6 (and related movements) that focus on the upper limbs – the arm circle and its many preparatory exercises – and see if they can be used to clarify pathways in the upper limbs and spine, illuminate habits and help us make different choices about how we reach and pull and engage with the environment.
Bartenieff Fundamentals: X-Rolls
In this workshop we will practice the Basic 6 (and related movements) that lead to the X-Roll, and explore variations that include different initiations, sequencing, and levels.
